Late September through October
Fall color

Where color shows up first
It starts high. Beech Mountain, the Grandfather ridges, and other crests often turn in late September and early October. Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk typically follow in October. Lower country, outside these four towns, turns later. The mountains do this in layers.
Rain, drought, and the first hard frost move the week around. A peak day published in September is a guess with good posture. Check the National Park Service and a local report during the week you're actually traveling.
A weekend that is busy whether or not it is the peak
The Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk is October 17 and 18, 2026, at Historic Banner Elk School. The festival FAQ lists admission at $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12, and free for age 5 and under. The festival describes that weekend as a traditional leaf weekend in town. That's a reason the sidewalks will be full. It is not a measurement that the ridges will be at peak color on those dates.
Parkway overlooks and Blowing Rock's village fill on fair October weekends. Go early if you want a parking space at a popular trailhead such as Rough Ridge.
The beaches in fall
After Labor Day the islands get quieter. The ocean often stays pleasant for a swim earlier in the season than the air suggests, then cools. Some businesses close. Hurricane season continues through November 30. The sand doesn't mind the smaller crowd.
