Coast
Memorial Day starts the busy rental season for many houses. July 4 week is the peak. Labor Day is the turn toward a quieter fall. Those three weekends, plus sunny Saturdays in July, are when the single bridges at Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, and Sunset Beach back up. Pack patience with the sunscreen.
Mountains
Thanksgiving week and the days around Christmas are the busy lodging weeks, especially if the ski areas are open. October weekends behave like a holiday even when the calendar doesn't call them one, because of leaf traffic.
Boone adds university holidays and home football. A room that's easy on a Wednesday in January is a different search on one of those weekends.
