June through August
Summer

On the coast
This is why the islands exist as vacation towns. Days are hot and humid. Afternoon storms are normal, the kind that smell like hot pavement and then rain. July, and the week of July 4 in particular, is the crowded stretch. The ocean is the warmest it will be in late summer.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. A named storm changes bridge traffic, rental rules, and whether you should be on a barrier island at all. Follow local emergency notices, not a guidebook.
In the mountains
Summer is the old reason for Blowing Rock: get above the heat. Days are warm, nights are cool, and a thunderstorm often builds after lunch. Beech Mountain stays markedly cooler than Boone because it sits much higher. Pack a layer even if Boone felt like July.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the scenic drive of the season, unless a storm or road work closes a section. Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, the Cone carriage trails, and Wildcat Lake are the public outings.
