Is the Oak Island Lighthouse in the Town of Oak Island?
No. The tower stands in the Town of Caswell Beach, at the east end of the same island. Oak Island is the neighbor to the west. Caswell Beach maintains the grounds and a beach boardwalk. The light is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation.
When did Oak Island become one town?
Long Beach and Yaupon Beach consolidated into the Town of Oak Island effective July 1, 1999. Caswell Beach sat that merger out.
What is west of Oak Island?
Lockwood Folly Inlet, then Holden Beach. You get there by going back across the waterway, not by driving the beach. The town prohibits motor vehicles and e-bikes on the public beach.
Can I climb the lighthouse?
Yes, with a reservation. The Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse take climbers up 131 metal ship stairs. You must be at least 9 and wear sneakers. Climbs are currently free, mornings only, on days the Friends post. You can still walk the grounds without climbing.
Can I bring a dog on the beach?
On a physical leash from March 16 through October 14. From October 15 through March 15, off-leash is allowed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. where signs say so, under visual and voice control, and not in the surf. The lighthouse grounds are next door in Caswell Beach and can post their own rule.
