Why do people stay in Boone instead of a smaller town?
Boone is the county seat, with Appalachian State University, groceries, a hospital, and the road junctions for Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, and Beech Mountain. The published elevation is 3,333 feet. The 2020 census counted 19,092 residents.
Is there a ski resort in Boone?
Not inside the town. Appalachian Ski Mountain is in Blowing Rock, the nearest of the three resorts in this guide. Beech Mountain Resort and Sugar Mountain Resort are farther and higher. Check the resort for current prices and opening dates.
What is Tweetsie Railroad?
A historic narrow-gauge railroad and theme park between Boone and Blowing Rock. Hours and tickets are on the railroad's own site.
When do the leaves turn in Boone?
Higher ridges such as Beech Mountain often turn in late September and early October. Boone more often colors in October. The week changes with rain and frost. This guide does not name a peak day.
Can I walk the university campus?
The campus is part of town and people walk it. Visitor parking is in the Rivers Street Parking Deck. The university says weekday evenings after 5 p.m., and weekends, are free unless posted. A home football Saturday is crowded, and an event can close a lot.
