Where is the Kindred Spirit mailbox?

In the dunes on Bird Island Coastal Reserve, west of Sunset Beach. From the 40th Street beach access it's about 1.4 miles southwest, 2.8 miles round trip. Watch for reserve signs. Stay on the beach and the marked paths.

Do I need low tide to reach Bird Island?

No. Mad Inlet closed after Hurricane Bonnie in 1999. The North Carolina Coastal Reserve says you can walk the length of the island at all times. Still obey nesting closures and any posted detour. The birds were here first.

Is Sunset Beach in South Carolina?

No. It's in Brunswick County, North Carolina, the last developed Atlantic beach in the state before the South Carolina line. Bird Island sits between the cottages and that line.

Can I drive the beach from Sunset Beach to Ocean Isle?

No. Tubbs Inlet is in the way, and the town code prohibits ordinary vehicles on the strand. Drive inland, then over the Ocean Isle bridge.

Can I bring a dog to the mailbox?

Yes, on a leash. The Coastal Reserve allows dogs and prohibits off-leash pets. The town strand is stricter in summer: no pets from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, and a leash no longer than 10 feet the rest of the time.
