Parking and beach access in Sunset Beach

Parking and beach access in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, and the rules that still need a town check.

Last updated October 15, 2026.

For the mailbox, the Coastal Reserve sends you to the 40th Street beach access. Park at the side of the road near that crossover, take the access to the sand, and turn toward Bird Island.

Other public accesses serve the developed beach. Street parking by a popular access fills on a fair summer day. The town posts the current fee, if it is charging one. Dunes and posted reserve ground are not a creative parking solution.

On the town strand, pets need a leash no longer than 10 feet. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, they are off the beach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bird Island is a separate rule: dogs are allowed, and off-leash is not.
