Winter holiday weeks are the crowded ski weeks, if the resort is open. Late summer is when regional writeups place a Mile High Kite Festival. October is when Land of Oz has held public autumn days in some years.

Mile High Kite Festival
The Avery County Chamber promotes a free Mile High Kite Festival at the meadow by 402 Beech Mountain Parkway. Published dates have not agreed with each other, so check averycounty.com before you pack a kite. Bring a jacket anyway. Elevation does not care that the calendar says summer.
