What is the Blowing Rock?

A cliff above the Johns River gorge, at 432 The Rock Road, and the reason the town has its name. Updrafts can blow light objects back upward. The overlook charges admission. A ticket is good all day. Hours and rates are on theblowingrock.com, and they move with the season.

Is Moses Cone park free to walk?

Yes. It is National Park Service land on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Parkway does not charge an entrance fee. The carriage trails, about 25 miles of them, are for walking. Flat Top Manor has long housed a craft center. Those indoor hours are seasonal, so check before you count on going inside.

How do I get to Boone?

U.S. 321 connects the two towns. Tweetsie Railroad sits between them. They're close enough to share a weekend and different enough that the village and the college town don't feel like one downtown.

Where is the skiing?

Appalachian Ski Mountain has a Blowing Rock address and is the nearby area. Beech Mountain Resort and Sugar Mountain Resort are farther north and higher. Check the resort for current prices and opening dates.

Can I drive the Parkway in winter?

Not reliably. The National Park Service closes sections for ice and snow. Check road status the day you go. A ski trip should not depend on a Parkway route.
