Last updated October 15, 2026.
Why is Holden Beach called a family beach?
That's the town's own motto. The island is long, low, and mostly houses. Shops and restaurants sit on the mainland side of the bridge, not along a boardwalk.
How do you get onto Holden Beach?
One road, N.C. 130, crosses the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. You can't drive the sand to Ocean Isle Beach or Oak Island. The town allows only emergency and official vehicles on the beach. Inlets bookend the island.
Where do people eat?
Mostly off the island, on the mainland approach and toward Shallotte. The island itself is houses and sand.
What is at each end of the island?
Shallotte Inlet on the west, toward Ocean Isle Beach. Lockwood Folly Inlet on the east, toward Oak Island. Both have current. Neither is a bonus swimming beach.
Can I bring a dog on Holden Beach?
Not in the middle of a summer day. From May 20 through September 10, pets are off the strand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside those hours, use a leash. The town FAQ states the rule.
